Understanding English Language Test Requirements

Find out how to check language requirements for your chosen course before booking a test.

English language requirements are an important part of the application process for many international study programmes. The rules are not identical across all universities or destinations. Before booking a test, check the requirements of the course and institution to which you intend to apply.

1. Confirm Whether a Test Is Required

Start with the official admissions page for your chosen programme. It should explain whether evidence of English proficiency is required and which forms of evidence the institution accepts. Some applicants may be assessed under different criteria, so check whether any stated exemptions apply to your circumstances.

2. Check Which Tests Are Accepted

Institutions may accept different English language tests or approved alternatives. Do not assume that a test accepted by one university will automatically be accepted by another. Confirm the accepted test options directly with each institution.

3. Understand the Required Scores

Check the minimum overall score and whether the university sets separate minimum scores for individual skills such as reading, writing, listening and speaking. Requirements may differ by course or level of study.

4. Review Test Dates and Result Timelines

Before booking a test, consider the university application deadline and the time needed for results to become available. Leave time for a possible retake if you plan to take the test again. Check the test provider's official website for current booking procedures and result information.

5. Check Result Validity

Universities and relevant authorities may have specific rules about how recent language test results must be. Confirm the applicable validity requirements and whether your result will still be acceptable when you apply.

6. Prepare with a Study Plan

Once you know the test format and requirements, make a preparation schedule. Become familiar with the test sections, practise within the permitted time limits and identify the areas where you need more work. Use official test-provider materials where available.

7. Submit Results Correctly

Read the institution's instructions for submitting results. Depending on the test and university, you may need to arrange an official score report or follow a specific verification procedure.

Verify Before You Book

Test requirements can change and may vary between programmes. Confirm the accepted tests, scores, validity rules and submission procedure using the current official university guidance and the test provider's information before making a booking.
